The Punch is Tata's micro-SUV for buyers who want the high seating and rugged looks of an SUV but have the budget of a hatchback buyer — the one that single-handedly created a segment and then dominated it. In 2024, it was India's best-selling car with 202,031 units sold, though sales dropped 14.1% in 2025 as the ageing design finally caught up.
Rivals included the Hyundai Exter, Maruti Ignis, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite. The Punch was the longest and widest in its segment, offering genuine SUV presence, while the Exter was the tallest.
Who should buy it? Safety-first city commuters who want SUV styling without the SUV price tag. First-time buyers who prioritise build quality over engine refinement. Anyone who thinks the Ignis is too basic and the Exter is too expensive.
What will bug you? The engine is a letdown — it's noisy, buzzy above 80 km/h, and highway overtakes require serious planning. The AMT is jerky and feels a generation behind modern CVTs or torque converters.
