The mid-size hybrid SUV segment in India has long been dominated by the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, now another mid-sized SUV is getting a hybrid powertrain and that is non other than the Renault Duster!
Duster Hybrid features Renault’s sophisticated E-Tech 160 strong-hybrid system, built around a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. This petrol unit is paired with two electric motors (a primary 49 hp drive motor and a 20 hp starter-generator) along with a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an intelligent multi-mode automatic transmission. This advanced setup allows the SUV to run on purely electric mode for up to 80% of urban city driving cycles.

When comparing performance metrics, the difference between standard non-hybrid engines and this strong-hybrid setup is striking: a conventional non-hybrid petrol engine in this segment typically puts out around 103 hp to 115 hp, whereas the Duster Hybrid pushes out a combined 160 PS (158 bhp) of power and 172 Nm of torque. Despite producing significantly more power, the hybrid system delivers a massive boost in efficiency, achieving an ARAI-certified mileage of 29 kmpl—comfortably surpassing its non-hybrid counterparts, which typically hover around 15–18 kmpl.
Renault’s heavy focus on strong-hybrid technology stems from a strategic push to bridge the gap between internal combustion engines (ICE) and full battery electric vehicles (EVs). By offering exceptional fuel economy without range anxiety or charging infrastructure dependencies, Renault aims to directly challenge Toyota's hybrid dominance and appeal to buyers seeking punchy performance alongside low running costs.
The Renault Duster Hybrid is expected to carry an estimated price tag ranging from ₹18.00 Lakh to ₹22.00 Lakh (ex-showroom).
Because strong-hybrid technology involves a larger battery pack, electric drive motors, and a multi-mode gearbox, the hybrid variants are expected to command a premium of roughly ₹2.00 Lakh to ₹2.50 Lakh over the non-hybrid turbo-petrol trims. Renault is expected to offer this powertrain exclusively in the higher-spec variants.
