In 1913, two men joined forces in a small London workshop. Lionel Martin was a racer. Robert Bamford was an engineer. They called their company Bamford & Martin. They sold Singer cars, serviced others, and dreamed of building their own . Martin raced at Aston Hill, near Aston Clinton. He did well. In 1914, they built their first car. A four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine dropped into an Isotta Fraschini chassis. They named it Aston Martin, after the hill where Martin won and after himself .
