A muddy field in Wales. A farmer who needed a vehicle that could do more than the Jeeps from the war. That is where Land Rover begins. In 1947, Maurice Wilks was the chief engineer at the Rover Company. He had a farm in Anglesey, Wales, and he used an old American Army Jeep to get around. The Jeep worked, but it was rough, noisy, and starting to wear out. Wilks thought about what would come next. What do you buy when the Jeep dies? He had an idea. What if Rover built its own vehicle? Something simple. Something that could work on farms, cross muddy fields, and still drive on roads. Something that did not need to be pretty, just useful.
