The story begins in October 1945. Two brothers, Jagdish Chandra Mahindra and Kailash Chandra Mahindra, started a steel trading company in Ludhiana with a third partner, Malik Ghulam Muhammad. The name was Mahindra & Muhammad. In 1947, India was partitioned. Malik Ghulam Muhammad moved to Pakistan and later became its first finance minister. The partnership dissolved. The Mahindra brothers bought his share, and in 1948, the company was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra. Now they needed a new direction.
