The Tata story is not really about cars. It is about a man who looked at India in the 1860s and refused to accept what he saw. Jamsetji Tata was born in 1839 in a small town in Gujarat. By the time he started his first business, India was drowning in imports. Everything from cloth to steel came from Britain. The country had raw materials but no factories to turn them into finished goods. Jamsetji believed that was stupid. In 1868, he started a trading company. Then he built textile mills. The Empress Mills in Nagpur became one of India's most successful textile factories. Jamsetji treated workers better than most owners of that time.
