The Nissan X-Trail is a large family SUV for buyers who want something different from the usual Hyundai, Toyota and Mahindra choices. Its design is understated, the cabin is comfortable and the seating position gives you a proper SUV feel. It does not try too hard to look sporty, which actually suits its relaxed character.
The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance is smooth and refined, while the CVT keeps the drive relaxed in traffic. It is better suited to comfortable cruising than aggressive driving, especially with a full load. Ride quality is good, and the first two rows offer plenty of space. The third row is more suitable for children or shorter adults, while boot space takes a hit when all seats are occupied. The large body can also be cumbersome in crowded city streets.
Who should buy it? A family that wants a comfortable, spacious and understated SUV for everyday use and long highway trips.
What will bug you? The high price, modest performance, limited third-row practicality and relatively small service network can make it harder to justify.
