The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 is what happens when Mercedes decides that a full-size luxury SUV still needs to behave like a sports car. It keeps the massive three-row body of the GLS but adds an AMG-tuned 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with serious power and torque. The result is an SUV that feels far more aggressive than its size suggests, while the cabin remains packed with luxury, technology and premium materials.
The V8 delivers brutal acceleration, and the automatic gearbox shifts quickly without ruining everyday comfort. All-wheel drive and performance-focused suspension give it impressive grip, although the sheer weight and size are always noticeable. The first two rows are extremely comfortable, while the third row remains useful for adults. Fuel consumption, tyre costs and maintenance are another story, especially if you actually enjoy using that V8.
Who should buy it? Someone who wants a luxury three-row SUV but refuses to give up serious performance.
What will bug you? The enormous dimensions, high running costs, expensive tyres and firm AMG setup can make daily driving unnecessarily expensive.

the twin-turbo V8 has zero lag, the AWD system is rear-biased for oversteer fun, and the active suspension cancels dive and squat. I took it to a skidpad and it held 0.95G lateral grip – phenomenal for its class. The only complaint is the lack of a manual mode that actually holds redline without upshifting.

The 9-speed is quick but not as immediate as the 8-speed DCT in competitors. The torque converter introduces a slight delay off the line, even with launch control. However, the rolling acceleration is monstrous – 100-200 kmph comes up in under 10 seconds. The chassis feedback is decent, but the electric steering is numb.

The engine is a masterpiece of forced induction – no lag, just relentless shove. But the 23-inch wheels on the AMG Package ruin the dynamic composure over mid-corner bumps. The chassis is communicative enough, but I wish the steering had more heft in Race mode. Still, the quarter-mile time justifies the price.

The torque peak of 850 Nm from 2,500 rpm means you're always in the power band. On the Mumbai-Pune expressway, I flicked it to Sport+ and the exhaust valves opened up – the downshift blips are addictive. The weight is felt in tight switchbacks, but the rear-axle steering mitigates it brilliantly.
