The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the few luxury SUVs that has stayed true to its original boxy character while becoming far more luxurious. It looks rugged, sits tall and has the kind of road presence that makes traffic move out of its way. Inside, however, it is a completely different world, with premium materials, modern technology and excellent build quality.
The G-Class offers powerful petrol engines, automatic transmission and a proper four-wheel-drive system with low-range capability. It is genuinely capable off-road, but most owners will probably spend their time driving it through city traffic and highways. The tall body gives excellent visibility, while the suspension handles rough roads reasonably well. Rear-seat space is decent, but the upright design and large dimensions can make tight parking and narrow roads frustrating.
Who should buy it? Someone who wants a luxury SUV with genuine off-road ability, iconic styling and unmatched road presence.
What will bug you? The huge size, heavy doors, high fuel consumption, expensive maintenance and stiff ride can become irritating.
