The Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG is one of those SUVs that does not try to hide its attitude. It combines the iconic boxy design of the G-Class with a powerful AMG engine, giving you serious performance along with genuine off-road ability. The cabin is far more luxurious than the rugged exterior suggests, with premium materials, modern screens and excellent road presence.
The AMG G 63 uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with huge power and torque, paired with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. It is surprisingly quick for something that looks like a military vehicle, but its tall body and heavy weight are always noticeable. The suspension is firm, the turning circle is large, and fuel consumption is definitely not its strong point. Still, the high driving position and excellent traction make it capable beyond normal city SUVs.
Who should buy it? Someone who wants a luxury SUV that can deliver supercar-like drama while still offering genuine off-road capability.
What will bug you? The price, fuel bills, huge dimensions and expensive maintenance can hurt more than a pothole.

The G 63 is a car that commands attention. Everywhere I go, people stop and stare. The V8 is a masterpiece, and the side-exit exhausts make it sound like a beast. The interior is ultra-luxurious, with Nappa leather and carbon fibre trim. The off-road capability is the real deal – three locking diffs and low-range make it unstoppable. It's a car that's as capable on the trails as it is on the boulevard.

I've been driving the G 63 for two years, and it still makes me smile every time I get in. The exhaust note in Sport+ is addictive, and the acceleration is brutal. The build quality is exceptional, and the cabin is a sanctuary of luxury. The only downsides are the fuel consumption and the firm ride on 22-inch wheels. But for a car this special, I'll happily make those compromises.
