Expert Review

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S is what happens when someone looks at a practical hatchback and decides it needs supercar levels of aggression. It keeps the compact dimensions of the A-Class but adds a seriously powerful engine, aggressive styling and performance-focused hardware. In India, it is one of the most entertaining ways to get into AMG ownership without buying a huge performance sedan or SUV. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produces around 421 PS, making it one of the most powerful production four-cylinder engines around. The AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox and all-wheel-drive system help put that power down effectively. Acceleration is brutally quick, while the sharp steering and clever torque distribution make it genuinely fun through corners. The ride, however, can feel quite firm on broken Indian roads. Who should buy it? Enthusiasts who want serious performance in a compact package and still need a car that can handle daily driving. What will bug you? The ride is firm, rear-seat space is average, ground clearance needs care and fuel, tyres and maintenance are expensive.

Honestly, this is too extreme for Indian roads. The 145 mm ground clearance means you scrape everywhere. The stiff suspension is unbearable on broken roads. The performance is staggering, but it's a track car masquerading as a daily. I regret not getting the regular A-Class.

The exhaust note in Sport+ is intoxicating – burbles, pops, and crackles on lift-off. I drive it through Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road just to hear the sound. But the ride is so firm that my back aches after 45 minutes. Also, no ventilated seats is a miss.

The 0-100 in 3.9s is no joke – it pins you to the seat. But the fuel tank is tiny, and the rear seats are practically useless for adults. Also, the infotainment lags occasionally when using CarPlay.

Daily driver in Pune traffic – the suspension is punishing on potholes. But the moment you hit an open road and flick it to Sport+, all the discomfort vanishes. The pops and bangs from the exhaust are addictive.
