The Maruti Wagon R is one of India's most practical small cars, and its boxy shape is actually one of its biggest advantages. The tall cabin creates good headroom and usable interior space, while the compact dimensions make it easy to drive through crowded streets and park in tight spaces. It is not glamorous, but it understands everyday Indian driving very well.
The 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines offer adequate performance, with the CNG version making more sense for buyers covering high kilometres. The manual is easy to drive, while the AMT reduces effort in traffic. The tall seating position gives good visibility, and the suspension handles normal city roads reasonably well. On highways, however, the lightweight body and tall shape do not feel as planted as a larger hatchback.
Who should buy it? Families and city commuters who want maximum practicality, low running costs and easy ownership.
What will bug you? Highway stability is average, cabin insulation is basic, and the design and interior feel more functional than premium.
