The Maruti Swift remains one of India's most popular hatchbacks because it gets the everyday formula right. It is compact, easy to drive and reasonably spacious, while its sporty design gives it more personality than most budget hatchbacks. The light controls and small turning radius also make it a natural fit for crowded Indian cities.
The latest 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine focuses more on efficiency than outright performance. It feels smooth enough in the city and delivers strong fuel economy, while the manual is easy to use and the AMT works well in traffic. The suspension handles typical Indian roads reasonably well, although the Swift is not particularly exciting when fully loaded on highways.
Who should buy it? First-time buyers, small families and city commuters who want an efficient hatchback with easy ownership.
What will bug you? The three-cylinder engine can sound coarse under hard acceleration, rear-seat space is only average, and highway performance with four adults and luggage is modest.
