The Maruti Jimny is one of the few affordable SUVs in India that is genuinely built for off-road use. Its compact size, ladder-frame chassis, high ground clearance and proper four-wheel-drive system with low range give it impressive ability on trails, mud and rocky terrain. The boxy design also gives it a unique personality that most compact SUVs simply cannot match.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine is smooth and adequate, but it is not particularly quick. The manual offers better control off-road, while the automatic is easier to use in traffic. Its small dimensions make the Jimny surprisingly easy to drive on narrow roads and trails. However, the short wheelbase and stiff suspension can make the ride bouncy on broken city roads.
Who should buy it? Buyers who genuinely want an affordable, compact 4x4 and enjoy weekend adventures more than highway cruising.
What will bug you? Rear-seat space is limited, the boot is small, highway performance is modest and the cabin feels basic compared with modern compact SUVs.
