Expert Review

3.7/5
The ISUZU MU-X is the no-nonsense, body-on-frame SUV for buyers who genuinely need to go off-road or tow heavy loads. It is a rugged, utilitarian machine that prioritises durability and capability over cabin luxury. This is for the farmer, the overlander, or the adventure enthusiast who laughs at flooded roads and broken trails. The 3.0-litre diesel engine is a torque monster—lazy, unstoppable, and built to pull anything from a boat to a trailer full of equipment. The ride is truck-like, with a stiff ladder-frame chassis that jiggles over city bumps but settles down nicely on highways. The steering is heavy and requires effort at parking speeds, and the cabin is spacious with a commanding view of the road, though it feels a decade behind rivals in terms of tech and materials. Who should buy it? Hardcore off-roaders, rural buyers, fleet operators, and anyone who needs a go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle without the fuss of electronic nannies. What will bug you? The interior plastics are hard and cheap, the infotainment feels outdated, and the ride quality in the city is harsh. It is not a family-friendly daily commuter; it's a tool, and it feels like one. Fuel economy is also abysmal by modern standards.

The 1.9L diesel engine is decent but lacks the punch of the Fortuner's 2.8L. The 6-speed torque converter feels sluggish under sudden throttle. Lacks modern ADAS features like adaptive cruise control. The cabin lacks the sense of occasion you get inside rival SUVs. A capable off-roader but feels outdated in 2025.

The plastic quality as well as fit and finish inside the SUV could have been better. Misses out on features like auto headlights and wipers that make it feel pared down compared to pricier rivals. Low resale value in secondary market due to limited brand recognition. Not worth the ₹35-37 lakh price tag.

Very solid and very responsive – I've driven a little above 20,000 km in 1.5 years. The Isuzu engine can lug around the city at 1000 rpm. It doesn't roll back on most inclines as the torque at such low rpm is sufficient. The high-set cabin offers a great view out.

Heavy steering makes it not exciting to drive. The tyres are very capable off-road with a nice ride quality, but the steering is a letdown. The interior is very simple and lacks the premium feel of rivals. Average mileage if driven mostly in city traffic.

For family travels, the MU-X has been an amazing choice. Navigating mountainous terrain is best suited for this SUV because of its 4WD capability and strong engine. Long trips are a pleasure in the roomy and opulent interiors. The innovative technologies and cozy interiors made our Manali trip unforgettable.
