The Mahindra Bolero is one of those SUVs that has survived mainly because it understands its job. It is simple, rugged and built for places where roads are more of a suggestion. The boxy design, high ground clearance and tough ladder-frame construction make it particularly useful in rural areas, rough roads and commercial use. It is not trying to impress you with screens or fancy interiors.
The 1.5-litre diesel engine is tuned more for practicality and low running costs than outright performance. It feels comfortable at moderate speeds and handles broken roads well. The cabin is basic, but the upright seating and spacious enough interior work for family and utility use. The simple mechanical package is also easier to live with when the nearest service centre is not exactly around the corner.
Who should buy it? Buyers who prioritise durability, practicality and low-cost ownership over features and refinement.
What will bug you? The cabin feels dated, performance is modest, highway refinement is limited and the ride can feel bouncy.
