Swift vs Baleno: Which Is Better for You?

If you want a compact, light and easy-to-drive hatchback with a more youthful character, buy the Swift. If you want more cabin space, a bigger boot and a more premium feel, buy the Baleno. However, the two cars have become much closer mechanically than they used to be. Maruti has phased out the Baleno's old four-cylinder petrol engine and now uses the same basic three-cylinder Z12E family as the Swift. And when you look at the prices, the Baleno becomes particularly interesting if you were already planning to spend money on a top-spec Swift.

The old Baleno engine is gone

The 2026 Baleno facelift has replaced the previous 1.2-litre four-cylinder K12N with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E engine. It makes 83hp and 112Nm and is available with a five-speed manual and AMT.

The Swift also uses the Z12E family, producing roughly 82hp and 112Nm in its petrol version.

So the biggest mechanical difference between the two cars has almost disappeared.

This is important because earlier you could say:

"Buy the Baleno if you want the smoother four-cylinder engine."

That argument no longer works for a new Baleno.

Now the bigger differences are the body, dimensions, cabin space, features, positioning and price.

Swift vs Baleno price: this is where things get interesting

The current Swift starts at around ₹5.84 lakh ex-showroom, while the Baleno starts at ₹5.99 lakh for the Sigma variant.

That means the entry-level cars are surprisingly close.

But look higher up the range.

The Swift ZXi+ MT costs around ₹8.44 lakh, while the Baleno Zeta MT costs ₹8 lakh and the Baleno Alpha MT costs ₹9.10 lakh.

This creates an interesting situation.

If you are already thinking:

"I will buy the top Swift."

Stop for a moment.

For roughly the same money, you can look at a Baleno Zeta, which gives you the larger Baleno body, more cabin space and the more premium NEXA positioning.

That does not automatically make the Baleno the better car for everyone.

But it makes the decision much harder.

The interesting comparison is Swift ZXi+ vs Baleno Zeta

This is the comparison I would pay attention to.

The Swift ZXi+ MT is around ₹8.44 lakh.

The Baleno Zeta MT is around ₹8 lakh.

So you could actually spend less money on a Baleno Zeta than on a top-spec Swift.

You are giving up some of the Swift's top-end equipment, but you are moving into a larger, more spacious hatchback.

This is where the Baleno starts making a lot of sense.

If you were going to buy the Swift mainly because you wanted the top variant, compare the equipment carefully before signing the cheque.

You may discover that you don't actually need every feature of the ZXi+.

And if you don't, the Baleno Zeta becomes a very interesting alternative.

The two cars now have the same basic engine idea

The Swift gets the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E. The new Baleno gets the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E.

Both get five-speed manual and AMT options.

The Baleno's engine has been calibrated differently, but this is no longer a situation where the Baleno offers a completely different petrol powertrain.

So if you are choosing between them in 2026, don't spend too much time asking: "Which engine is better?"

Ask: "Which body and equipment package suits me better?"

Buy the Swift if you want a compact city car

The Swift remains the smaller and more youthful option. It is 3,860mm long and has the advantage of a compact footprint. That matters when you live in a crowded city.

You can squeeze into tighter parking spaces. You can make U-turns more easily. You can steer through narrow streets without feeling like you are piloting a bus. On the top of it, the Swift still has character.

It has been one of India's most recognisable hatchbacks for two decades, and the current generation still carries that small, sporty identity.

Maruti quotes up to 24.8 km/l for the petrol manual and 25.75 km/l for the petrol AMT.

If your typical day involves office traffic, tight lanes, mall parking and short city trips, the Swift's compact dimensions make a lot of sense.

Buy the Baleno if you want more car

The Baleno is the bigger hatchback. It is almost four metres long and has a more spacious cabin. You notice the difference most when you put adults in the rear seat or start loading luggage. It feels less like a small hatchback and more like a family car.

That is the main reason to buy it. You are not buying the Baleno because it has a dramatically better engine anymore. You are buying it because there is more car around that engine.

The 2026 facelift also gives the Baleno a stronger premium equipment list, including features such as Level 2 ADAS and ventilated front seats on the Alpha (O) variant.

Swift LXi vs Baleno Sigma

At the entry level, the two cars are surprisingly close in price.

The Swift LXi starts at around ₹5.84 lakh.

The Baleno Sigma starts at around ₹5.99 lakh.

If your budget is tight and you simply need an affordable hatchback, the Swift gives you a smaller package for slightly less money. The Baleno Sigma makes sense if you want the larger body and are willing to spend a little more.

Neither is the obvious choice for everyone.

This is really a question of whether you value compactness or space.

Swift VXi vs Baleno Delta

Move one step up and the price difference becomes more noticeable.

The Swift VXi MT costs around ₹6.68 lakh.

The Baleno Delta MT costs around ₹7 lakh.

The Swift gives you a lot of what most urban buyers actually need without pushing the budget too far.

The Baleno asks for roughly ₹32,000 more, but you are getting into the larger premium-hatchback package. If rear-seat space matters, that extra money can make sense.

If you mostly drive alone or with one passenger, the Swift remains perfectly logical.

Swift ZXi vs Baleno Zeta

This is probably the most balanced comparison.

The Swift ZXi MT costs around ₹7.62 lakh.

The Baleno Zeta MT costs around ₹8 lakh.

Now you are paying only around ₹38,000 more for the Baleno.

That is not a huge difference when you are already spending ₹7-8 lakh on a car.

So if you need the extra cabin space and larger-car feel, the Baleno Zeta becomes very interesting.

If you want a smaller car and prefer the Swift's character, save the money and buy the Swift.

Swift ZXi+ vs Baleno Zeta: the decision gets really interesting

This is the one that could confuse buyers.

The top Swift ZXi+ MT costs around ₹8.44 lakh.

The Baleno Zeta MT costs around ₹8 lakh.

So the Baleno Zeta is actually cheaper.

You could be sitting in a showroom looking at a fully loaded Swift and then realise:

"Wait, for less money I can get a bigger Baleno."

That is a valid reason to reconsider.

However, the ZXi+ is the Swift's top variant, so it gives you more of the Swift's available equipment. The Baleno Zeta is not its top trim.

So this is not a simple feature-for-feature comparison.

It is a choice between:

Top-spec smaller car

versus

Mid-spec larger car.

If you care about features, take the Swift ZXi+. If you care more about space, premium feel and the larger body, look closely at the Baleno Zeta.

What about the top Baleno?

If money is not the main concern, the Baleno climbs considerably higher.

The Alpha MT is around ₹9.10 lakh and the Alpha (O) MT around ₹9.50 lakh. The Alpha (O) adds features such as Level 2 ADAS and ventilated front seats.

At that point, the Baleno is clearly being positioned as a premium hatchback rather than simply a larger Swift. So if you want maximum features, the Baleno has more room to stretch your budget.

Swift vs Baleno: who should buy what?

Buy the Swift if:

  • You mostly drive in the city.

  • You want a compact car.

  • You regularly deal with tight parking spaces.

  • You prefer a youthful design.

  • You don't need maximum rear-seat space.

  • You want a fully loaded car without crossing too far above ₹8 lakh.

  • You like the Swift's driving character and identity.

Buy the Baleno if:

  • You regularly carry family.

  • You need more rear-seat space.

  • You want a bigger boot and more cabin room.

  • You want a more premium hatchback feel.

  • You like the NEXA positioning.

  • You don't mind spending slightly more for the larger package.

  • You were planning to buy a top-spec Swift but realise that a lower or mid-spec Baleno gives you the size you actually need.
