Neue Klasse Design Language Based BMW 8th Gen Lauched!

The BMW 3 Series has entered its eighth generation, and the new G50 takes the nameplate in a very different design direction. Based on BMW's Neue Klasse design language, the new 3 Series gets a cleaner, wider and more minimal exterior, while its cabin moves away from the familiar driver-focused layout of the G20. The result is a 3 Series that looks closely related to the electric i3, but continues to use combustion engines underneath.

The Neue Klasse design language is BMW’s deliberate reset of its visual identity for the next decade and beyond. It debuted conceptually with the Vision Neue Klasse (2023) and first appeared in production on the iX3, then the i3 and the combustion G50 3 Series. The name deliberately echoes BMW’s original “Neue Klasse” cars of the 1960s (the 1500/1800/2002 era) that established the brand’s modern identity—simple, sporty, and progressive.

BMW 3 Series G50: A Major Design Change

The eighth-generation BMW 3 Series G50 marks one of the biggest design changes for the nameplate in recent years. While the car continues to use BMW's CLAR architecture, its visual identity has moved towards the company's Neue Klasse design philosophy.

At the front, BMW has replaced the more complex face of the outgoing G20 with a flatter and wider design. The kidney grille now sits within a horizontal lighting signature, while slim LED headlights give the car a more modern look.

The side profile is also cleaner, with flush door handles and simpler surfacing. At the rear, a full-width horizontal light signature gives the G50 a stronger connection with the new BMW i3.

A Bigger 3 Series

The new BMW 3 Series is larger than the outgoing G20 in almost every direction. It is around 50 mm longer and 24 mm wider, with a slightly taller body and a modest increase in wheelbase.

Despite the increase in size, BMW has kept the traditional proportions of the 3 Series, with a long bonnet, short front overhang and a rear-wheel-drive-based stance.

The Biggest Change Is Inside

The cabin is where the Neue Klasse influence becomes even more obvious.

BMW has removed the curved display setup used in the later G20 and replaced it with a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen angled towards the driver. The new BMW Panoramic Vision system displays information across the lower section of the windscreen, while an optional 3D head-up display adds another layer of information.

The familiar iDrive rotary controller is also gone. BMW has reduced physical controls and moved the seat adjustment controls onto the doors.

This makes the G50 cabin look far more minimal than the outgoing 3 Series, although it also represents a major change for BMW buyers who are used to the brand's traditional cockpit layout.

BMW 3 Series G50 Engine Options

At launch, the BMW 3 Series G50 will be available with petrol engines supported by 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

The range starts with the 318, which uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing around 154 to 156 hp and 250 Nm.

The 320 uses the same basic engine layout but produces around 208 to 211 hp and 330 Nm.

Both versions use an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

At the top of the initial range sits the BMW M350 xDrive, which replaces the M340i. It uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six producing around 437 to 443 hp and 580 Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels through the xDrive system.

BMW claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of around 4.1 seconds.

Technology Takes Centre Stage

The G50 also introduces BMW's latest software and connected technology.

Key features include:

  • BMW Operating System X

  • 17.9-inch central touchscreen

  • BMW Panoramic Vision

  • Optional 3D head-up display

  • Amazon Alexa+ integration

  • Over-the-air software updates

  • Advanced Level 2 driver assistance

  • Driving Assistant Plus

  • Configurable ambient lighting

  • Haptic controls on the steering wheel

BMW is also working towards hands-free motorway driving capabilities for the platform.

BMW 3 Series G50 India Price

A reasonable expected India price is around ₹65 lakh to ₹85 lakh, ex-showroom, based on current Indian 3 Series pricing and the positioning of the new international range. This is an estimate, not an official BMW price.
