The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ZXi MT petrol is the best value for money variant for most private family buyers. It gives you the important family-focused features that make an Ertiga useful, including automatic climate control, second and third-row AC, rear parking camera, alloy wheels, SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment and a more premium cabin, without paying for the extra luxury features of the ZXi+ trim. However, there is no single "best" Ertiga variant for everyone. A city family, a highway user and a commercial cab driver have very different priorities. The VXi CNG can make more financial sense for a high-mileage cab, while the ZXi+ makes sense for buyers who want a more premium seven-seater experience.

Maruti Ertiga variants at a glance
Maruti Suzuki currently offers the Ertiga with a 1.5-litre petrol Smart Hybrid powertrain, a factory-fitted S-CNG option and a 6-speed automatic on selected petrol variants. The official Maruti Suzuki page lists the Ertiga from ₹8.85 lakh ex-showroom, with the VXi MT at about ₹9.90 lakh, ZXi MT at about ₹10.96 lakh and ZXi+ MT at about ₹11.64 lakh on its current city-specific price page.

So, which Ertiga should you actually buy?
My recommendation
For a private family: Ertiga ZXi MT petrol

For a city family that wants an automatic: Ertiga VXi AT
![]()
For a cab or very high annual running: Ertiga VXi CNG

For a family wanting more premium features: Ertiga ZXi+ MT

For the lowest purchase price: Ertiga LXi MT

The interesting part is that Maruti has given the Ertiga a fairly logical variant structure. You do not have to buy the top variant to get a usable MPV. At the same time, the jump from VXi to ZXi brings enough useful equipment to make the higher variant worth considering for a private owner.
Why the Ertiga ZXi MT is the best value for money
The ZXi MT sits in the sweet spot of the Ertiga range.
The current official price difference between the VXi MT and ZXi MT is roughly ₹1.06 lakh.
For that additional money, you get several features that are genuinely useful in a seven-seater.

The rear camera is particularly useful on an Ertiga. This is a 4.4-metre-long MPV with a seven-seat layout, so parking it in a crowded market or apartment basement is easier when you can actually see what is behind you.
The automatic climate control and third-row AC also make more sense in an MPV than they would in a small hatchback. You have more people inside the cabin, more cabin volume and passengers sitting much farther away from the front AC vents.
That is why I would spend the extra money on the ZXi MT for a private family.
Ertiga VXi MT vs ZXi MT, which one makes more financial sense?
This is the most important comparison for a private buyer.
The VXi MT costs about ₹9.90 lakh, while the ZXi MT costs about ₹10.96 lakh on Maruti's current official listing. The gap is roughly ₹1.06 lakh ex-showroom.
If your only goal is to buy the cheapest sensible Ertiga, VXi MT is enough.
But if you are keeping the car for 7 to 10 years, the calculation changes.
You are paying roughly ₹1 lakh more for features that you will use every time you drive the car. The rear camera, automatic climate control, alloy wheels, better infotainment, smart key and better cabin finish are not features that sit unused in a brochure.

If you live in an urban area, which Ertiga should you buy?
For an urban buyer, the answer depends on whether you want a manual or automatic.
Urban family with manual transmission: ZXi MT
This is my preferred choice.
City driving means frequent parking, traffic, short trips and regular use of the second and third rows. Features such as the rear camera, automatic climate control, smart key, better infotainment and rear AC become more valuable in this environment.
The ZXi MT gives you most of what makes the Ertiga feel like a comfortable family MPV without taking the price all the way to the ZXi+.
