Force Gurkha Vs Mahindra Thar ROXX FAQs

The Gurkha 3 Door starts around ₹16.75 lakh (ex-showroom) in many cities. On-road in Delhi it comes near ₹19.9-20 lakh depending on variant, taxes, RTO, etc.

Under its hood sits a 2.6-litre diesel engine (FM 2.6 CR CD), making about 138 bhp @ 3200 rpm and 320 Nm torque between ~1,400-2,600 rpm. Transmission is 5-speed manual, and drivetrain is 4WD with mechanical lockers/differentials for serious off-road grip.

The Gurkha 3 Door measures ~3,965 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 2,080 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,400 mm. Ground clearance is about 233 mm. Boot space is ~500 litres.

Owner-reported real-world mileage is about 12 kmpl in mixed city driving. ARAI certified or claimed mileage is a bit higher depending on variant and driving conditions.

This is not a city slicker. Gurkha 3 Door shines when you hit rough roads, off-road trails, mud, water crossings (with snorkel optional or standard in some trims), mountain roads with steep inclines, or remote forest tracks. If your daily commute is potholes, inclines, rough surfaces, or if you live somewhere with seasonal rough terrain, then Gurkha makes sense.

Buy it if you love adventure more than comfort, want a car that looks badass and can take a beating. If your roads are bad, or your trips include off-road escapes or needing 4×4, this is your kind of car. If you want luxury tech or rear-seat softness, maybe less so.

You get basics like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, heavy duty chassis, good brakes front, durable rear, steel wheels, big tyres (255/65 R18 in many trims), good ground clearance, and rugged suspension setup. It isn’t plush, but built to endure.

Let’s estimate: assume you drive ~15,000 km per year (75,000 km in 5 yrs). If average is ~12 kmpl, fuel cost = For 75,000 km, you need ~6,250 litres (75,000 ÷ 12 ≈ 6,250). If diesel is ₹90/litre (approx), fuel cost = ₹5,62,500 over 5 years. Add in maintenance, tyres (thick tyres + offroad wear), insurance, tax = maybe another ₹1.5-2 lakh or more depending on use. So 5-year ownership could easily touch ₹7-8 lakh+ (fuel + servicing + insurance etc) for heavy offroad use. For mild city & highway mix maybe less.

Thar Roxx is the 5-door, upgraded version of the Thar, launched on 15 August 2024. It’s bigger, safer, more feature-rich than the older 3-door Thar, trying to keep the off-road legend alive while being more usable daily. Bookings opened in mid-2024, variants include both RWD and 4×4.

Thar Roxx comes with two main engine choices: a 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. Both engines are offered with 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AISIN torque-converter automatic. You can get RWD or 4×4 depending on variant. Petrol variant produces about 150-175 bhp / 330-380 Nm, while the diesel is similarly powerful (~171-175 bhp / 370 Nm) at higher trims.

Thar Roxx has made history: it is the first body-on-frame SUV in India to secure a perfect 5-star Bharat-NCAP safety rating. It scored 31.09 out of 32 for adult occupant protection (AOP) and 45 out of 49 for child occupant protection (COP). Standard safety gear includes six airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, seatbelt reminders, ISOFIX child anchors, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and more. Higher variants also come with Level-2 ADAS features (AEB, lane-keep/assist etc.), 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring.

Thar Roxx uses Mahindra’s new M_GLYDE platform, which is lighter, stronger, and tuned for better NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) control. It gets independent double-wishbone front suspension, multi-link rear suspension with Watt’s linkage, Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD), Hydraulic Rebound Stopper (HRS), etc. These help in rough terrain and in smoothing out irregular city roads. The body-shell is all-metal, including full hard top, using high-strength steel especially in the pillars.

1. Length: ~ 4,428 mm, width ~ 1,870 mm, height ~ 1,923 mm, wheelbase ~ 2,850 mm. 2. Fuel tank ~ 57 litres. 3. Mileage: In city ~ 12.4 km/l for petrol in congested traffic. Diesel and highway numbers not fully published in all variants yet but expect better in highway / lighter load situations. Because of its size, weight, 4×4 hardware and big tyres, real world mileage will drop if you drive rough, carry many people, use AC, etc. Don’t expect hatchback numbers.

Buy if you are into off road adventures, you want presence, space (5 doors), safety (5-star), style plus capability. If you often drive in hilly / rural / water-wade areas, or just want to enjoy weekend trips, it’s a strong pick. Skip if most of your drive is tight city traffic, parking constraints, you prefer comfort over ruggedness, high efficiency, or want a quiet, smooth cruising car (like sedans or monocoque SUVs).

The Roxx petrol delivers about 12.40 km/l, while the diesel returns up to 15.20 km/l (ARAI). At an average Indian fuel price of ₹ 102/litre, the diesel costs around ₹ 6.71/km, while the petrol costs around ₹ 8.23/km. Real city runs drop lower: ~₹ 9/km for petrol and ~₹ 8.5/km for diesel. In short, your gym subscription is cheaper than driving it daily, but hey, Roxx is about adventure not penny-pinching.

Inside the Roxx, you’ll find ventilated front seats, a dual-tone cabin with leatherette trims, twin HD displays, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a panoramic Skyroof. Add to that wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, Alexa connectivity, ambient lighting, 360° camera, and a cooled glovebox. Translation: it’s no longer just mud and boots, you can now enjoy Spotify and cappuccinos while climbing mountains.
