Vietnam is following the path of South Korea. It is transforming itself from a struggling economy to one of the fastest-growing developing nations. In just a few decades, it has risen from near-zero industrial capabilities to becoming a hub of innovation and manufacturing. In just a few decades, it has risen from near-zero industrial capabilities to becoming a hub of innovation and manufacturing.
The automotive sector in Vietnam is riding this wave of progress. Brands like Truong Hai Auto (THACO) and Thanh Cong Group have built their reputations by assembling and distributing vehicles for global players like Kia, Hyundai, and Mazda. Yet, the one name that truly stands out is VinFast, a subsidiary of the Vingroup conglomerate.
VinFast partnered with BMW for advanced engineering and Pininfarina for cutting-edge design. The company debuted its first internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in 2019. Shortly thereafter, VinFast made an ambitious pivot to electric vehicles, introducing innovative models that have gained significant attention in markets like the U.S. and Europe.
Now, VinFast is expanding into India.
VinFast uses high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, sourced from leading battery manufacturers like LG Energy Solution. They have incorporated state-of-the-art battery management systems (BMS) that monitor the battery’s temperature, voltage, and overall health, ensuring that it operates within optimal conditions.
Vinfast models are expected to have a range of around 500 KMs in India.
VinFast’s expected lineup for India will likely feature a mix of compact, mid-size, and premium electric vehicles snce they have some serious competition out here, right from desi Tata & Mahindra to MG.
The VinFast VF 5 is expected to be one of the first models from the Vietnamese automaker to enter the Indian market, targeting the growing demand for affordable electric vehicles (EVs) in the Micro SUV (Calling Hatchback makes more sense). In India, the VinFast VF 5 will compete against some of the most popular electric crossovers and compact SUVs in the market like Tiago.
The VF 5 is equipped with a choice of 29.6 kWh or 37.23 kWh LFP batteries, providing a range of 260-300 km per charge, making it an ideal option for city driving. Its compact dimensions of 3,965 mm in length, 1,720 mm in width, and a 2,513 mm wheelbase ensure ease of maneuverability while maintaining a comfortable interior space.
The VF 5 will support DC fast charging, allowing the battery to be charged from 0 to 80% in under 60 minutes with fast chargers. With regular AC charging, the car can be fully charged overnight, making it a practical daily driver.
Given its positioning as a compact electric SUV with a range of 260-300 km and modern features, the expected price of the VF 5 could be in the range of ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh. This would place it competitively against similar offerings like the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.
The next model in VinFast's lineup for India is expected to be the VinFast VF 6, a more premium electric SUV designed for buyers seeking a compact yet feature-rich vehicle. Positioned above the VF 5, the VF 6 will compete with vehicles like the Hyundai Creta EV and MG ZS EV, both of which cross the 4000 mm mark in length.
The VF 6 will offer two motor variants: the 130 kW (170 hp) Eco version and the more powerful 150 kW (200 hp) Plus version. Both variants are paired with a 59.6 kWh battery, enabling a range of up to 399 km (248 mi) on a full charge, based on the WLTP cycle.
With a length of 4,239 mm, a width of 1,821 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,730 mm, the VF 6 is larger than its sibling, the VF 5, and comparable in size to other popular electric SUVs like the Hyundai Creta EV and MG ZS EV.
VF 6 is expected to be priced between ₹15 lakh and ₹18 lakh, making it a competitive player in the premium electric SUV segment in India.
The VinFast VF 7 was first introduced in January 2022 and is a premium electric SUV that offers both style and performance. It comes with two motor options: the Eco FWD model with a 150 kW (201 hp) single motor, and the more powerful Plus 4WD model with a 260 kW (349 hp) dual motor. The VF 7 is powered by a 75.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, giving it a good driving range, making it suitable for both city and highway trips.
The car has a coupe-style body, which gives it a sleek, sporty look. With a length of 4,545 mm, a width of 1,890 mm, and a 2,840 mm wheelbase, the VF 7 offers plenty of space inside, making it comfortable for passengers. It is expected to compete with vehicles like the Mahindra XEV 9e in India.
