Bhavish Aggarwal, the CEO of Ola Electric, has taken a swipe at Google's pricing for map data, asserting that it's prohibitively expensive for Indian companies. He has also outlined Ola's ambitious plans to develop an indigenous map for India, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in this strategic sector.
Bhavish Aggarwal's bold statements regarding Google's pricing and Ola's mapping ambitions elicited a mixed response from the public and industry experts. While some applauded his efforts to promote self-reliance and challenge foreign tech giants, others raised concerns about Ola's capabilities and the potential challenges involved in developing a comprehensive and accurate map for a vast and diverse country like India.
Amidst this ongoing debate, Rohan Verma, the CEO of MapmyIndia, entered the fray with a significant claim that cast doubt on Ola's intentions. Verma alleged that Ola had previously licensed MapmyIndia's map data and continued to use their APIs and SDKs in their vehicles until 2021. He accused Ola of breaching the terms and conditions of their agreement and questioned the company's integrity.
Ola Electric's CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, dismissed MapMyIndia's claims as an attempt to capitalize on Ola's IPO success. MapMyIndia has sent a legal notice to Ola to which Aggarwal said: "Empty vessels make more noise". Further Ola too recently issued a legal notice to MapMyIndia.
The exchange of legal notices has further intensified the conflict between the two companies.
