The Tata Nano was once celebrated as the most affordable internal combustion engine (ICE) car in India, aiming to cater to budget-conscious consumers. Despite its engineering excellence, it faced challenges in market perception, as some potential buyers associated it with a "lakhtakiya" (one-lakh rupee car) image, leading to reluctance in ownership. This marketing misstep overshadowed the vehicle's merits.
Now, Vayve Mobility, a Pune-based startup, has introduced Eva, India's first solar-powered electric car, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Priced at an introductory ₹3.25 lakh (ex-showroom) for the first 25,000 customers, Eva is designed as an affordable option for small urban families. It offers a driving range of 250 kilometers on a single charge, with an additional 10 kilometers daily from its rooftop solar panels. The vehicle supports ultra-fast charging, adding 50 kilometers of range in just five minutes. Features include smartphone integration, vehicle diagnostics, remote monitoring, and over-the-air updates.
