A recent video making rounds on Instagram has caught the attention of car enthusiasts and safety advocates alike. It features a Maruti Dzire Gen 4 that sustained significant damage after being sandwiched between two cars. Despite the severity of the accident, all occupants were reported safe, highlighting the improved structural integrity of this generation of the Dzire.

Dzire and WagonR, two of Maruti's most popular models, were once infamous for their "tin can" label, reflecting concerns about their structural integrity. However, Maruti surprised everyone with the Gen 4 Dzire, earning a 5-star safety rating on Global NCAP. The first real-world test of this improved safety standard was witnessed recently in a major accident that left a Dzire in total loss but ensured the safety of its occupants.

The Incident

The crash involved a Gen 4 Dzire sandwiched between two vehicles, resulting in extensive damage:

  • The front left wheel rim and tyre were completely destroyed.

  • The front bumper, grille, and headlights were crushed.

  • Despite the severe impact, the doors remained intact, showcasing the improved cabin strength and structural correctness of the Gen 4 Dzire.

Previous generations of the Dzire were criticized for fragile builds and low safety ratings, but the Gen 4 Dzire marks a significant improvement with high-tensile steel, reinforced door structures, and compliance with stricter crash norms. Unlike 1- or 2-star rated cars with weak crumple zones and minimal safety features, 5-star cars like the Dzire offer superior impact absorption, cabin integrity, and advanced features such as multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, and ESP, ensuring enhanced occupant protection.

Although the Gen 4 Dzire's performance in the accident was impressive, one slight concern raised was why all six airbags did not deploy. The logic lies in modern airbag deployment systems, which are designed to activate only the necessary airbags based on the nature and direction of the impact. In this case, since the crash primarily affected the front and left sides, only the airbags in those areas were triggered, conserving other airbags for additional impacts if needed. This selective deployment ensures optimal protection without unnecessary activation.
